Authorities and residents of Zamfara State have reported that a military airstrike targeting armed groups in the conflict-ridden northwest mistakenly killed several civilians working with community security outfits.
This marks the third misfire by the military in just over a year during aerial bombardments aimed at extremists and rebel groups.
Sulaiman Bala Idris, the spokesman for the state governor, stated that the Nigerian Air Force was targeting rebels in the heavily affected Zurmi and Maradun areas of Zamfara State.
Regrettably, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes were among those affected during the operation in Tungar Kara, resulting in the loss of lives.
Officials have not disclosed the exact number of civilian casualties, and the Air Force has yet to issue a statement. However, local residents reported counting up to 20 bodies, with 10 others receiving treatment for injuries.
