A three-storey building under construction at Aboga, along Igwuruta-Etche Road in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, collapsed on Saturday afternoon. Reports indicate that seven people have been rescued from the rubble.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred while workers were on site.
Although no lives were lost, seven of the nine workers present were rescued with varying degrees of injuries, while two others jumped from the building to safety.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Emeka Kalu, confirmed the incident in a statement.
Kalu described the incident as unfortunate and stated that, aside from initial rescue efforts by residents, the Ikwerre Local Government authorities and officials from the Rivers State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, along with the Ministry of Special Duties, responded promptly to distress calls.
He added that the ministries deployed excavators, a fire truck, and an ambulance to ensure the timely rescue of victims, some of whom were trapped beneath the rubble.
