A civil society group, Coalition of Like Minds has applauded the judgement that elected local government administrations cannot be dissolved without recourse to the Supreme Court judgement on the independence of the local government.

This is coming on the heels of a recent judgment by the chief judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa at the High Court One, Benin City.

The civil society group in a statement by its co-ordinator, Jesurobo Udins, harped on the need for Nigerians especially the political class to respect constituted authorities and the provisions of the law.

The Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, had declared that the State Government, the Sate House of Assembly, or its agents have no right to dissolve elected local government council officials as applied to other states across the country.

He cited the recent judgment delivered by the Supreme Court, in a suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

He said the case law reference A.G. Federation Versus the A.G. Abia State number 36 ORS (2024) LPELR – 62576 (SC), played a crucial role in shaping the judgment, adding that the Supreme Court’s decision on the matter has set a precedent that now stands as a guiding principle in similar cases.

According to him, the judgment reaffirms the importance of upholding the integrity of democratic processes and respecting the will of the electorate as elected council members in the third tier of government hold a mandate for the people.
