A former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticised the proposal for the creation of an additional 31 states in Nigeria.

The proposal was made on Thursday by the House of Representatives Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary on Thursday read a letter from the committee containing the proposed states.

Reacting to the development in a post on his X handle, Senator Sani said it is not only ironic but also comical.

The former lawmaker questioned why new states are needed when most of the existing states depend on allocation from the federal government to survive.

According to him, while many states are dependent on federal allocation for their survival, the House of Representatives proposal for 31 states is ironic and comical.
