Not less than 150 people are feared dead following a boat mishap in Niger State.

The tragedy occurred in Gbajibo community, Mokwa Local Government Area around 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

The boat, said to be carrying about 300 passengers, was returning from a Muslim festival when the incident occurred.

Report says 150 passengers have been rescued, and the rescue operation is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, officials of Niger State Emergency Management Agency are intensifying a search and rescue operation.

Director-General of the agency, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah made this known in a statement in Minna on Wednesday.

He said the agency in collaboration with the state Ministry of Transport, Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers, are monitoring search and rescue operations.

The cause of the mishap is yet to be determined
